How I got rich teaching yoga, no regrets!

This month marks one year since I left the corporate world and the salary package that most people dream of. When I say salary package, I mean the kind that allows you to travel first class, take multiple holidays a year, eat out, buy great clothes and have amazing homes. I remember wondering a year ago if I would regret my decision. Not only do I not regret it, I reckon that this year has been one of the best years of my life. I have been able to explore myself deeply and identify my life purpose while making a difference in the lives of others.

Exactly, one year ago I was physically sick and medically depressed. You can read more about "my story" on my website. It was one of the darkest and challenging periods of my life. My story to me is incredibly personal and something that I kept quiet for the most part. I have always thought it was wrong to show your weaknesses in life and things like this should just be kept quiet and dusted under the rug. So it feels good to fully communicate my story in the hope that it could help or inspire someone else.

The pressures I felt from being in a high impact role in a lot of ways destroyed my life, mind and soul. I felt that it was time to let go of the work that I did for the last fifteen years and continue my journey of self - exploration. What I realize now that I didn't a year ago was that the journey of self exploration never ends. The more you explore, the more you find. It's only when your fully open to the journey, will you find things that you never realized even existed in the first place.

When you google topics related to becoming a yoga teacher, or anything within the genre, you will see countless articles themed around how many yoga teachers went broke trying to teach, difficulties they have, financial struggles, etc, etc. I wanted to turn my passion, my love of yoga combined with my coaching skills into something that made a difference in others, while maintaining some sort of financial security. Reflecting on these yoga articles today, I have a very different opinion then what these articles portrayed. Simply put, you can make or break whatever you want in life and really turn anything into an opportunity.

Yoga is a multi billion dollar industry and very much a global trend these days. With a strong business sense and a passion that matches, you can earn a good wage that can even afford you the external pleasures of life (if that is what you wish). It takes will, self-power, and confidence as does any profession or business. A very good friend and teacher, Darren Main wrote a book called the The Yogi Entrepreneur. In his book he breaks it down very simply for new and existing yoga teachers to not only stay true to their passion of yoga, but to do it with a business sense. He even provides some great tools to help you do it. Darren is an international yoga and meditation teacher, author and an amazing dad!

One year later, 5 lessons that I learned.

  1. Anything is possible in life... the more you want something, the more likely that you are to achieve it. The mind is a powerful tool that has control over your internal and even external things. My favourite quote from the Upanishads... "Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; for it becomes your destiny". When you change your thinking, your results will change just as quickly.

  2. I have no regrets for the choices I made, only lessons learned and things that I might do differently in the future.

  3. The more money you have doesn't bring you happiness... this was a big one for me, but very true. The feeling of richness comes internally and is not related to anything external or your bank account balance.

  4. Becoming true to yourself and with others is the core strategy of letting yourself escape your ingrained level of thinking. It's only when you let go, will you find yourself doing what you thought or felt was impossible. Like me, it was changing my life, finding my passion and having the courage to step forward and do something about it.

  5. To succeed with your life purpose or business takes work, confidence and motivation. As humans, there are no limits to our capabilities. Remember this, remember this, remember this!

One year later, I have succeeded in making a difference in the lives of others and gained financial stability at the same time. It took a lot of work, passion, self-will, and dedication.

To the many new and possibly struggling yoga teachers out there, studio owners, those doing what they love or anyone who has made similar transitions in your life, I encourage you to continue your journey, to not give up and to realize that there are people out there who can help or pick you up when you get down (it happens to all of us).
